Course info
This course covers four core modules that address the definition of sustainable development and how that translates to engineering projects, whilst the elective modules can be chosen from a diverse range of engineering divisions. Jointly administered by the Departments of Architecture and Engineering the IDBE programme explores issues, goals and methods that cross the boundaries of built environment disciplines.

How much will it cost?
Composition fees for 2008/09: £3,320 (full time UK/EU). All courses will incur an additional College fee of £2,090. For part-time research degrees (PhD, MSc, MLitt), the fee is 60% per annum of the full-time fee, for both the University Composition and College Fees. The Composition Fees for the MPhil in Economics and the MPhil in Finance will be £7,175 for Home/EU students; for the MPhil in Management and the MPhil in Technology Policy the Composition Fees will be £12,219 for Home/EU students. Staff undertaking research pay one third of 'Home' students' fees. Figures have been indicated for yearlong courses (those courses running for less than one year will be charged on a pro rata basis) & are liable to change. If you undertake a course involving abnormally expensive laboratory materials, you may be expected to contribute towards the cost of your research (in addition to the University Composition and College Fees). It is recommended that applicants refer to the Board of Graduate Studies website for up to date details before applying.

Entry Requirements
In a few faculties, it is possible to embark on a three-year course of doctoral study straight after a first degree. In most faculties, however, a candidate is expected to have completed one year of postgraduate study, normally on a research preparation masters course, prior to starting a PhD. You are normally expected to hold or to be about to achieve: at least a 2:1 honours degree or overseas equivalent. Some faculties require you to take other tests such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Where this is required, it will appear in the application details for each course. If you wish to undertake a research degree, you should first make sure that the appropriate faculty or department has the necessary expertise and resources. Some faculties ask that you identify a suitable supervisor before you submit your application. For part time research degrees, you will need to provide a letter from your employer (if any) confirming that you may have time off. If your first language is not English, you should take a language proficiency test. You must achieve the minimum requirements no more than two years before the start of your course: An IELTS overall band score of 7.0 with not less than 7.0 in speaking, listening and writing, and 6.5 in reading. Where the IELTS test is not available, you may take the TOEFL test. If you do this, you must take the Test of Written English (TWE) at the same time. Minimum requirement: 600 in the paper-based TOEFL test with 5.0 in the Test of Written English or 250 in the computer-based TOEFL test with 5.0 in the Essay Writing Test. The minimum requirement for TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) is an overall score of 100. Some courses stipulate a higher level of English language competence. You should check the appropriate level for your proposed course of study. You will need to arrange for us to receive an original test result or a certified copy.
